Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols including the process of how the meaning of signs are constructed and implicated.  The process of studying a certain sign or symbols can be attempted using three fields.

The three fields are:

  • Semantics – is an idea of a relation of signs and there object.
  • Pragmatics – is a relation of signs to the influence and function on those who use them.
  • Syntactics – is the relation of sign and its formal proprieties, moreover, the rules that state how signs and symbols create a meaning.

Such as:

  • The colour red can indicate sexy, anger, love, danger etc. Also red in certain cultures e.g. Hindu females (red vermillion) indicates a married woman, on the other hand, in other cultures (Japanese) it is seen as good luck.

The concept of semiology relates well to Graphic Design, because signs and symbols communicate with a person around the basis of their everyday life. For instance; a sign defines a visual and informative communication.

Environment

Environment in graphic design sense would concentrate more on the idea of Graphic Design, architecture and so forth. In terms of Graphic Design environment dose not relate much to the natural environment, but more concerned with communicating designing brands and identity. To build up a business like environment a brand would have to take in consideration money because in this climate a recession is major factor to take into an account because the economic climate is declining, due to companies and brand are not making enough profit.

Environment can also be simply defined as natural and social soundings. The definitions changes in accordance to the surrounding that we are in, for example; a person could define their environment in relation to the weather and climate. However they could also define it in relation to the people who are surrounding them. To sum up an environment is ever changing circumstances that people them self controls whether in a positive or negative way.

Modernism / Postmodernism

Postmodernism mainly relates to the concepts of reinventing an innovating ideas and designs to surpass current or past inventions and design. In other words postmodernism is related to improving ideas. For examples pop arts is great concept because people may have seen pop art as an improved idea in comparison to art that may have been seen as unexciting and boring. However pop art was seen as something as popular and cool. Postmodernism evolved in the 20th century, where social, cultural, and political and where economical changes were being created. It was a revolutionary time where artist, for example Andy Warhol felt that the tradition of the past did not represent the time they were living in. It was mainly a part of a ‘visual and decretive movement.’ For example graffiti’s has become a very popular culture because before it used be seen a negative way but now it’s been describe as a way of expressing Art. Modernism was a slow movement reducing the idea of reinvention and stopping new ideas from evolving.

He has also designed for Louis Vinton; in edition Murakami’s work is also available on affordable stuffed animals, key chains and coffee mugs. He believes art work is more about creating goods to sell then about exhibitions.

Animation

I never had the opportunities to create an animation, as i didn’t know how to create one. What I found interesting about animations is the process in which you have to go through to create an interesting and vibrant clip. It is a lengthy process but the outcomes are extraordinary.

While surfing through YouTube I came across this 2min animation video clip, which inspired me a lot to create my own and to learn how to use different media to create my own.

This video clip which I created myself.

Evert Brown is famous animation director, who has animated and designed for well know films, for examples Charley Brown, Snoopy and Garfield the Cat. His work has inspired me a lot because of his own cartoon based characters and, which animated them in a extraordinary way that had me hooked me growing up watching these characters and now knowing the effort that you have to go through in order to create an animation yourself.

Street graffiti

Graffiti art, not everyone is a fan of this. There are still number of people who still think it’s wrong to do graffiti. Well i mean it depends on what angle you look at it from, for example; one type is doing graffiti outside a shop window or on rail train etc and on the other hand it could be seen as a piece of art work.

I think people who do graffiti it is their way of expressing the beauty of art. I mean if an artist that dose graffiti, people who that look at it may think its beautiful, master piece, but on the other the same people who might walk down an alleyway and see graffiti on a wall might may think its bad influence to younger generation or a bad thing do.

I think it’s a wonderful thing to do, using all these different colours and materials spray paint, building 3d cartoon characters etc. I will recommend for every to have a go at it (not on streets), it’s a fun experience and this may change your point of view about street graffiti.

Museum of Packaging and advertising

I visited the Museum of Packaging and advertising, and it was an great experience. In the 21st century almost all the packaging designs has been computerised. But going back into history of design of packaging it is extraordinary. They have designed a cereal package out of hand drawn rendering, very simple of way of advertising.

On the other hand you got famous brands, which had been in the market for decades, for example; Pepsi, Lucaozade, Jack Daniels (JD), Cadbury’s, Rolo etc.

I will advise for everyone are who interested in packaging design should go there and a have visit, because it is very interesting to look at and a lot to learn from it. There are a lot of adverts and packaging that you may of come across while you were young.

Networking

Networking over the internet is another way of staying in contact; this could mean staying in contacts with old friends new friends, with your clients, tutors, information about assignments deadlines etc.

Facebook is one of the following of networking. I go on to facebook more often than checking my mail. It’s fun, interesting, make new friends, get in touch with old friends that lost in contact, meet new people etc. Yes it does come in handy other than social life, for example; if I have question based on my assignment i can get in contact through facebook to my tutors, I need the information when my deadline is for my course it’s already there. Promoting my art work through facebook, such as, I’m at a party i having a conversation with some one that I don’t know and talk about designs that I do, which they might be interested in and the other and easy way to communicate is through facebook.

Calligraphy

Art of beautiful, stylized, or elegant handwriting or lettering with pen or brush and ink. It involves the correct formation of characters, the ordering of the various parts, and the harmony of proportions. In the Islamic and Chinese cultures, calligraphy is as highly revered as painting. In Europe in the 14th – 16th century, two scripts developed that influenced all subsequent handwriting and printing: the roman and italic styles. With the invention of modern printing (1450), calligraphy became increasingly bold and ornamental.

By controlling the concentration of ink, the thickness and adsorptive of the paper, and the flexibility of the brush, the artist is free to produce an infinite variety of styles and forms. In contrast to western calligraphy, diffusing ink blots and dry brush strokes are viewed as a natural impromptu expression rather than a fault. While western calligraphy often pursues font-like uniformity, homogeneity of characters in one size is only a craft.

Personal time

It is very important that you get personal time, because this is the time where you can actually have your own space and express your feelings about art. For example; me personally I think I need my space when I need to do my work, it encourages me to think about more ideas that i could put towards my ideas. A lot of people may disagree with this because there are a lot people and artist designer that could work in very busy environment, which could be their part passion towards art.

I think nothing should stop you from expressing your feelings toward art, if you need a personal time to do your work or if you like to do your work in the open or in a busy environment than you should go ahead. Last but not least if you haven’t tried none of these I think you should have go at it, doing that you might find out what you’re really best at.
